Rio Unable To Adequately Host Games
Just last week the city of Rio de Janeiro was broke, essentially asking for ways to create emergency relief funds. Just yesterday a Paralympic gold medal winner from Australia was robbed of her bicycle at gun point. The Zika virus has made attending dangerous.
Rio has been unable to clean up Guanabara Bay where human sewage continues to remain, carrying disease-spreading viruses and bacteria. It’s new subway line is scheduled to open just 4 days before the start of the games. Good luck. Construction delays could cause the venues to not be completely finished prior to opening ceremonies.
The point here is that third world nations, with economies that are unstable, filled with crime, and governments that when bidding on hosting the Olympic Games, have no idea if they can actually afford to host them. Rio will lose billions of dollars as the Zika virus threat alone will keep tickets from being sold. The insecurity of a third world city will keep many from attending, and many great athletes will decide not to compete.
The International Olympic Committee should not be as concerned about the political correctness of moving the Olympics to different venues as they should be about who can actually pull the games off. Sochi was a bit of a disaster and Rio will be worse, and the blame should clearly rest on the international Olympic committee.
